For this project I pushed for a return to the style of the original iconic Network Rail animations we’d begun under Nick Scott. I updated the graph paper look, evolving more into a contemporary laminate construction board material, and tried to build a more cinematic and emotive lighting scheme that would evolve over the journey.
The bulk of the animation was done by Garry Brown, I handled the look development, some of the modelling, a little animation and scene layout, along with all the textures, shaders, lighting and compositing, with Kirk Smith on mo-graph duties. All in, almost 5 minutes of animation, rendering and compositing by 3 people in just two weeks!
